Development & Technology

The Development and Technology Department at Petrochem Carless is engaged in a wide range of activities, including problem solving and the development of new products and technologies for existing and prospective customers. Recent projects include:

• Extending our range of Reference Fluids to meet customer special requirements.
• Developing improved, environmentally friendly fuels for motorsport and powerboat events.
• Investigating new and improved fluids for drilling offshore.
• Occupational hygiene studies with drilling fluids.
• Developing new, user-friendly fluids for the printing ink industry.
• The production of speciality lubricants for metalworking applications.
• The introduction of a new range of high quality extender oils.

Our laboratories at Harwich Technical Centre is well equipped with a range of petrochemical testing and analytical apparatus. The main laboratory includes automatic equipment for measuring density, flash point, aniline point, pour point, distillation range, and vapour pressure, plus a comprehensive range of manual equipment covering relevant ASTM and IP methods.

The analytical laboratory has extensive capability and expertise in GC, GC/MS, HPLC, FTIR, Atomic Absorption, UV, Microcoulometry, Thermal Desorption, X-ray Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Headspace Analysis.

There are also distillation and hydrogenation pilot-plant facilities within Harwich Technical Centre.

The Gunness Laboratory is equipped not only to perform a range of analyses supporting QC procedures for the automotive fluids businesses but also has a wide range of equipment for the development and evaluation of automotive antifreeze, brake fluid and windscreen wash.
