An exciting new company, Petrochem Carless Ltd, was created in December 2000. PCL (Petrochem Carless Ltd) consists of Carless Refining and Marketing Ltd, formed in 1859 by Eugene Carless and Petrochem, formed in 1981, a major European Distributor of Chemical Solvents.
Carless was one of the first UK oil companies and in the 1870's developed a new volatile substance called 'Petrol'. This is still the generic name for gasoline used throughout the UK. With a long and successful history of product development and manufacturing within the petrochemical industry, Carless attained a prominent market position.
Petrochem UK Ltd, although by far the younger company, grew quickly but steadily and established itself as a market leader in petrochemical distribution in the UK. Acknowledging the potential for growth, Petrochem Distribution BVBA, later to become Petrochem Carless BVBA, was established in 1996 to represent the group in continental Europe and non EU export markets.
In 2000, recognising the need to market new products and present wider services to their increasing customer base, Petrochem UK acquired Carless from the Spanish Repsol-YPF Group. This major acquisition offers great opportunities to combine strengths and develop both the distribution and the manufacturing arms of the business.
